Behind one of his works, Dutch post-Impressionist artist Vincent van Gogh’s self-portrait was discovered.
Behind cardboard and several coats of adhesive, the image was obscured.
The finding, which is thought to be a first for a UK institution, was uncovered by art conservators while examining Van Gogh’s 1885 piece
“Head of a Peasant Woman” for a future exhibition, according to the National Galleries of Scotland.
As stated, the x-ray revealed “a man sitting with a beard wearing a brimmed hat and tying a necktie loosely around his throat.
The right part of his face is in shadow, and his left ear is plainly visible as he confronts the observer with an intense gaze “.
