Frida Kahlo’s Diego y Yo painting sold for $34.9 million at an auction by Sotheby’s making it the most expensive piece of Latin American Art. Frida Kahlo is a female painter born in Coyoacán, Mexico. In 1925 Frida was involved in a bus accident that would cause her to undergo more than 30 medical operations. During this time is when Frida taught herself how to paint. Although most of her paintings are fairly abstract, Frida’s modeling and self portraits shows her interest in realism. She would often lay in bed with a mirror above her bed to paint her self portraits. This paiting in particular shows a self portrait of Frida with her husband Diego on her forehead. Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo’s relationship was far from placid: they were married in 1929, divorced in 1940, and then married again that same year. Together, these two colorful, larger-than-life artists have endured as vibrant characters in a singularly Mexican drama.
